You can't fault Troma for championing the
underdog. They've made their entire reputation via flying under the radar,
challenging the Tinsel Town norm, and discovering unsung talent. Without the
company, we wouldn't have the genre geek James Gunn, or his equally impressive
spouse Jenna. In fact, there are dozens of titles Meat Weed Massacre,
Rock and Roll Space Patrol: Action is Go!, Viral Assassins,
Superstarlet A.D., Dumpster Baby, the collected works of Warren F.
Disbrow, and the wonderful creative canon of Giuseppe Andrews - that would have
gone unnoticed and unappreciated had this Manhattan mainstay not stepped up and

Guns at Batasi

Despite good intentions, Guns at Batasi (1964) never really
gels. Both critical of British Imperialism and elegiac toward career soldiers
and their rigid formalities and traditions, the picture compares unfavorably to
the vastly superior Zulu, released that same year and which covers much
of the same ground. Guns at Batasi, by contrast, is uninvolving and for
various reasons inauthentic, and though Richard Attenborough admirably goes out
on an actorly limb as the film's central character, an old-fashioned,
disciplinarian of a Regimental Sergeant Major, his performance is simply too
broad to be believed.

Set in present-day Africa, in a fictional East African nation, the film takes
place on a British military base used to train indigenous conscripts during the

As NBC prepares for life after "Will & Grace," "Friends" and "Frasier,"
you can't help but think, "Hey, maybe they should bring back 'NewsRadio.'" A
sitcom somewhat ahead of its time, which lasted five seasons and roughly 97
episodes from 1995-1999, it's an odd mix of standard sitcom tropes fused with a
distinctly off-the-wall sense of humor; in the vein of the recently departed
"Arrested Development," you have to pay attention during "NewsRadio" to
appreciate the biting subtlety of Paul Simms' creation but if that's too taxing,
fret not: invariably, a well-timed piece of slapstick will come along.

Hollow Man 2

Paul Verhoeven's Hollow Man didn't exactly take the world by storm,
but the flick apparently sold enough DVDs to warrant this (much) lower-budgeted
direct-to-video sequel. And while it's not even up to the meager standards of
the first entry, Claudio Faeh's Hollow Man 2 delivers just enough B-movie
sci-fi slickness to warrant a rental ... provided you didn't outright hate the
first flick.

"In name only" is the phrase of the day here, as Hollow Man 2 has next
to nothing to do with the first entry. This time around we have Christian
Slater's voice as a psychotic inviso-man who also happens to be a former solider
extraordinaire. In an effort to combat the side effects of the inviso-serum
(apparently it makes you decay or something), Michael Griffin must track down
the team of scientists who dabble in high-tech transparency ... and kill them
all. (I think.)

Viewtiful Joe, Vol. 2

If you're into videogames at all (action ones in particular) then you have no
doubt played Viewtiful Joe at some point in your life. The unique style
of combat and artistic flare became an instant success among the gaming
community and even though the series didn't start too long ago it has already
received a couple more installments. In particular, fans of comic book heroes
and cheesy kung fu movies were drawn to the wild characters and chopsocky
antics. It should be no surprise then that we're now checking out the anime of
the same name.

Originally airing in 2004, the Viewtiful Joe anime ran for a total of
51 episodes in Japan and has been broadcast here in the States on the Kids WB.
The anime follows the game franchise, but there are some liberties taken here in

Beware of any movie that wants her to pretend to be something else.

For example, beware of "Last Holiday." Here she plays a quiet, timid
Louisiana woman who lives a solitary life of little importance. When this woman,
Georgia Byrd, learns she has three weeks to live, she moves to a luxury hotel in
Europe to spend her final days doing all the fun things she only dreamed about

Recommended! I know a lot of Family Guy faithful look down their nose at
American Dad as MacFarlane copying a little too liberally from himself. I'll
admit it was strange to have the two shows butted up together, because their
surface similarities foster those very vocal fan comparisons. Despite their
perceived similarities, the shows are really quite different, and there is still
quite a bit of very funny comedic boundary-pushing going on here. This
three-disc set of 13 episodes has some great non-PC laughs, and that never goes
unappreciated around my house. Recommended.

fascinating part of the director's cinematic work. A more troubled film than

treasure trove of material not to be missed.

Based on the fantastic manga by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist
the anime is doing wonderfully on DVD. The show tells the tale of two brothers
in search of the Philosopher's Stone to undo a mistake from the past. When
Edward and Alphonse Elric were younger the disobeyed basic fundamental rules of
alchemy and attempted to bring their mother back from the dead. The process
literally claimed the brother's lives but thanks to the magic of alchemy and
some nifty machine work by their friend Winry the two pulled through.

Unfortunately they weren't able to escape the tragedy completely unscathed
and as a constant reminder of the blunder their bodies were altered. Edward lost
his right arm and left leg forcing him to have them replaced with mechanical

A better-than-you'd-suspect noirish psychological thriller shot in
Connecticut in 1962 for just $40,000, Violent Midnight (1964), better
remembered under its general release title, Psychomania, is the third of
a trio Del Tenney movies released by Dark Sky Films. Well-acted, adult, and
imaginatively directed, it's by far the best of the three but unfortunately has
the most problematic transfer. Despite their low budgets and terrible
reputations, all three (the other two are The Horror of Party Beach and
Curse of the Living Corpse, released as a double-feature disc) have at
least something to recommend them.

Rumor Has It...

"Rumor Has It..." is a high-concept comedy whose high concept is the most
interesting thing about it. Once that's out of the way, it's just your basic
relationship melodrama.

But it is a great concept. A Pasadena woman named Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer
Aniston) comes to realize that her grandmother and mother both slept with the
same man, and that their story was subsequently fictionalized into the book and
film "The Graduate." What's more, she thinks she might be the offspring of the
affair between her mother and the man in question.

The film is set in January 1997 (which makes one character's reference to
"Titanic," released 11 months later, a bad idea), with Sarah newly engaged to
her adoring boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo). They have flown home to Pasadena for
the wedding of Sarah's younger sister, Annie (Mena Suvari), and thus Sarah finds

Based on a manga by Peach-Pit, DearS was available in Japan in the
Dengeki Comic Gao magazine on a monthly basis and here in the states we can read
the manga thanks to Tokyopop. As with a lot of popular manga, DearS got
the conversion into an anime series last year and has finally found its way
overseas to the U.S. thanks to Geneon. The thirteen episode anime (much like the
manga) features several commonplace standards from large-eyed big-breasted
aliens to a guy sexually victimized by an obsessive and attractive girl. DearS
has been an interesting show to this point but a "me too" atmosphere clouds the
overall premise.

"Dorian Blues" is one of the best gay-themed films to come out (pardon the
pun) in the last few years -- and it was written and directed by one Tennyson
Bardwell, who, despite being named Tennyson Bardwell, is straight. I don't have
any theories on what that means, I just think it's interesting.

The film covers a few years in the life of Dorian (Michael McMillian), a
suburban kid struggling, at the end of high school and into his college career,
with his sexuality. He undergoes the usual events -- acting straight, pursuing
religion, choosing asexuality, a bad first boyfriend -- in what amounts to a
funny and pleasant character arc and a highly enjoyable film.

Set around 1990, Dorian lives in upstate New York with his blowhard father
(Charles C. Fletcher), wallflower mother (Mo Quigley) and favored-son younger
